In looking for ways to execute on my own purpose in life, which is to empower every relationship I touch, I often asked myself “how I could take the numerous one-on-one conversations & learning’s I’ve had over my lifetime and convert them into one-to-many experiences”. My public speaking / thought leadership & initial blog articles were only first steps, as they didn’t give me the scope of one-to-many collaborative benefits I desired. Nor did they give adequate opportunity for everyone in the audience to contribute in the same manner.
Being a spiritual person, I’m always conscious of positive signs that I’m taking the right actions to further my own development & growth whilst contributing to yours. This morning I had a doctors visit at the local clinic & I finally stopped to understand the table full of books at the entrance. Until now I had thought that it was a once-off initiative, possibly exchanging knowledge for some sort of donation.
I was blown away to read the sign in Catalan (yes.. I now have added Catalan to my reading capabilities) and discover that the table had been established not for your typical doctor’s reception reading material whilst you wait endlessly for your appointment, but rather for you to take home if you’d like. And if that wasn’t enough, the sign even says that you don’t have to return the book! WOW!?!?!
Now here is the greatest sign that humanity is indeed an empathetic civilization.. whilst I sat there & read my free May edition of Time Magazine which someone had kindly donated, I saw at least 7 people within a 15 minute period drop off more books. Some exchanged leaving one for taking one, and some just dropped off a few books they must have had lying around. My Time Magazine was in English, but there were books in French, Spanish (Castellano), Catalan & more.
Whilst I was there I also noticed that this area was a natural place for engagement & I proudly walked away after three brief chats feeling much more integrated into this small Catalan society which is my neighborhood of Sarrià. You can bet that upon my next trip I’ll be dropping off some of my books & magazines currently gathering dust on my shelves.
So back to my initial set of questions.. What have you done today to better your development & growth? Better yet, what have you done recently to better the development & growth of another?
